Last month, the CDC released a Public Health Alert about the increase in Fentanyl related overdoses and deaths. Fentanyl is an extremely potent synthetic opioid, which is 50 times stronger than heroin. It is famously attributed to the death of the singer “Prince.” It’s legal use is for pain management after surgery, or to treat chronic pain for patients who are physically tolerant to other opiods. In it’s illegal use, it is often mixed with heroin, or disguised as prescription pills on the counterfeit market, leading to a potentially deadly combination for the user.
